About Our Training Program
Under the direction of Mr. Stacy Harrelson, the UMS-Wright Athletic Training room offers students and athletes on-site physical training and therapy using cutting edge techniques and equipment. Mr. Harrelson and his full-time assistant athletic trainer, assisted by two full-time physical therapists, work in conjunction with Encore Rehabilitation, owned by Paige Plash and Paul Henderson, and The Orthopaedic Group to serve UMS-Wright student-athletes and their families for both injury prevention and treatment.
Dr. Jeff McGowin of The Orthopaedic Group has been the UMS-Wright team doctor for more than 12 years. Dr. Charles Wilson, also with The Orthopaedic Group, joins us this year. Dr. Mike Maitre, Jr., of the Maitre and Crabtree Dental group, begins his second year with us. Dr. Rod Rocconi of the University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Center has been with UMS-Wright for the past two years. Every summer, AHSAA required Participation Physicals are offered to our student athletes free of charge through our training staff. Our team doctors and other local physicians volunteer their time to make this a convenience to our UMS-Wright family.
UMS-Wright administers baseline concussion testing and post-injury testing through ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion and Cognitive Testing). The goal is to heighten awareness of the signs and sypmtoms of head injury and stress the importance of intervention for safe, effective, on-field diagnosis, treatment, and transport if a head injury occurs. UMS-Wright works closely with Dr. Ronderos at the Pinnacle Brain & Spine Center to interpret the results of the concussion tests. Dr. Ronderos and his staff access these results in the office and determine when athletes are ready to return to competition.
Athletic Training 101 is a course offered by Mr. Harrelson to Seniors at UMS-Wright who may be interested in entering a medical field. Students are introduced to on-sight physical therapy and day-to-day athletic training duties. These student trainers work at team practices and games throughout the year.
