Meet the Coaching Staff
Head Coach Libby Hoffman
With sixteen years of head coaching experience, Libby Hoffman returns for a tenth season as Head Volleyball coach at UMS-Wright. She has amassed a high school career record of 541 wins and 267 losses. The Bulldog Varsity Volleyball team has made nine straight Elite Eight appearances in as many years, finishing in the top four 4A schools for two of those years. Coach Hoffman also has fourteen years experience at the club level, coaching in the off-season for girls ranging in ages from ten to eighteen years. She served on the Board of Directors of Rocket City Volleyball Club in Huntsville, and developed Port City Juniors, a program for twelve-and-under volleyball players from the UMS-Wright middle and lower schools. Coach Hoffman graduated from Satsuma High School and earned an athletic scholarship to Springhill College. She transferred to the University of South Alabama where she continued her collegiate volleyball career and earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. Coach Hoffman begins her twenty-ninth year in education this academic school term. She currently serves in the Technology Department at UMS-Wright where she works with teachers incorporating technology into their classrooms and lesson plans. She also assists students with Infused Education and other technology-related needs. This year Coach Hoffman steps back into the classroom, teaching Critical Thinking and Study Skills. Her husband of twenty-one years, Joel, graduated from the Air Force Academy and is retired from the Army Corps of Engineers. Coach Hoffman is the past president for the Mobile County Coaches Association and worked at the state level assisting AHSAA in the development of the Super Regional volleyball championship playoff format.
Assistant Coach WING BRETT
Coach Wing Brett returns to the UMS-Wright Volleyball staff for his third season. He retired from the Baldwin County School System where he served as a teacher, coach, and Digital Renaissance Advisor. Coach Brett will be teaching and working in the technology department here at UMS-Wright. In his 16 years as a varsity volleyball coach, Coach Brett amassed 473 victories with nine trips to the Elite 8 and was chosen twice to coach the AHSAA South's All-Star team. Coach Brett earned his undergraduate degree from Huntingdon College and his masters degree from The University of South Alabama. Coach Brett is married to the former Mitzi Pannone, and they have three daughters - twins Emily and Erin, and the youngest, Amanda.
SHANNON PHILLIPS - HEAD MIDDLE SCHOOL COACH
Coach Shannon Phillips returns for her 8th year on the UMS-Wright volleyball coaching staff. In addition to coaching, she also teaches AP, honors, and college prep chemistry at UMS-Wright. She has a total of ten years coaching experience including middle school, JV, and club volleyball teams. Coach Phillips graduated from Dothan High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Huntingdon College, and earned a master’s degree from The University of South Alabama. While playing volleyball at Huntingdon she was named to the All-Freshman Team, the All-Conference Team, and the All-Academic Team. She and her husband, Chris, have a one-year-old son named John. Chris is the Planning and Analytics Coordinator for Sacred Heart Health System.
ANGIE IRVIN - MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSISTANT
After taking three years off, Coach Angie Irvin rejoins the coaching staff at UMS-Wright as the middle school assistant volleyball coach. Prior to the 2016 season, Coach Irvin has a total of nineteen years of coaching experience under her belt. She has served as head/assistant coach at Theodore, MGM, and Satsuma, with seven of those years at UMS-Wright.In addition to coaching middle school volleyball, Coach Irvin will be entering her second year as the middle school girls basketball coach. She played collegiate softball at Mobile College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in education. Coach Irvin will be starting her 25th year in education this fall, where she will be teaching Algebra I/II. She and her husband, Marty, have two children, Ashton (c/o 2014) and Tyler (10th).
