Brett Patterson scattered four hits over seven innings as UMS-Wright beat Jemison 5-1 in the first game of their Class 4A third-round baseball series on Friday at UMS.

Patterson struck out three and walked just one.

The second game was postponed until 1 p.m. Saturday due to rain. If Jemison wins Game 2, a third game would follow.

"Brett was oustanding," Bulldogs coach Brett Boutwell said. "The big thing he did was stay away from three-ball counts. One real big thing was that we jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. That can make a big difference in the playoffs. We also played good defense."

UMS (27-10) scored a run in the first and two runs each in the second and fifth innings. Jemison scored its only run in the top of the seventh.

Grant Barber had a double and two runs scored for the Bulldogs, Gunner Roach had a single and an RBI and T.J. Dixon had a double and a run scored.

Jason Caudle took the loss for Jemison. He gave up five runs on four hits in 5.2 innings.

UMS-WRIGHT BASEBALL ADVANCES TO 3RD ROUND

Class 4A Baseball Playoffs: No. 6 UMS-Wright 10, No. 5 Thomasville 2

Ben Thomas | bthomas@al.com, April 27, 2013 2:30 p.m.

THOMASVILLE, Alabama -- UMS-Wright scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back Saturday, crushing Thomasville 10-2 in Game 3 of their Class 4A second-round playoff series.

The Bulldogs (26-10) won the best-of-three series 2-1 and will host either Bibb County or Jemison in the third round next week.

"The first inning obviously was the key," UMS coach Brett Boutwell said. "Last night, we got down 6-0 in the first game and 5-1 in the second game. We talked this morning about needing to strike first, and we did that today by scoring four in the first."

UMS got a two-run double from Troy Dixon and had two more runs score on an error to take a 4-0 lead. They tacked on two more in the fourth for a 6-0 lead.

After Thomasville (23-9) got two back in the fifth, UMS countered with four more in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Grant Barter and Dylan Goff both had RBI doubles in that inning, and Chauncey Callier had a two-run triple.

Dixon finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for UMS. Barber was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Goff was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Callier was on base three times with his triple and two walks.

Thomasville was led by Seth Downey (3-for-3 with a double) and Will Brassell (2-for-3 with an RBI).

On the mound, Gunner Roach went all seven innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five. UMS played excellent defense behind him, failing to commit an error and ending the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with a double play.

The win was Roach's fourth in a Game 3 in the past two seasons.

"Gunner had a good day," Boutwell said. "They put some balls in play against him, but our defense was outstanding."
