Meet the coach
Coach Michael Napp is entering his third season as head coach of the Bulldog basketball program. A 1996 graduate of UMS-Wright, Coach Napp began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant under Coach Kemper Todd in 2000. He also spent a season as an assistant under Coach Anthony Clark in 2003-2004. Coach Napp left UMS-Wright to become the head coach at Northeast Jones High School in Laurel, MS. In his two seasons there, the Tigers saw tremendous success and advanced to the South State semifinals in 2006. For the next eight seasons, Coach Napp was the head coach at Chelsea High School in the Birmingham metro area. He left Chelsea with the second most wins for a coach in program history while leading the Hornets to school records in season wins and their only postseason victory in the last 28 years. In his first two seasons back at UMS-Wright, the Bulldogs made the playoffs both years advancing to the subregional round. Coach Napp teaches high school Engineering and study hall classes at UMS-Wright. He and his wife Susanne have been married for 16 years, and they have four children – Davis (1st Grade), Bryce (K5), Mary Carolyn (K4) and Cameron (2 years old).
The 16-17 Basketball season was very successful for all of our teams. The middle school teams both had outstanding seasons as the 7th grade boys (Coach Trent Powell) finished with a 14-1 record and the 8th grade boys (Coach Rick Cleveland) were 10-6. The JV Boys, led by Coach Butch Case, completed their schedule with a record of 18-4. The future is very bright for Bulldog Basketball!
The Varsity Bulldogs finished the year with a 21-6 record and a top 5 ranking in the 4A basketball polls. Highlights of the season included a 13 game winning streak stretching from December 28 through February 3, sweeping rival St. Paul’s, and finishing undefeated in 4A Area 1 to claim the regular season area championship. For the third season in a row, the Bulldogs were eliminated by Monroe County, the 2017 state runner-up in 4A.
Freshman Trey Bonham led the Bulldogs in scoring, assists, and rebounds and was named the winner of the Beverly R. “Ruff” Wilson MVP award. Senior captain Thomas Barnett was recognized as the team’s leader and received the William A. L. Mitchell Award. Fellow senior Walker Breland earned the Allen Graham coaches award for displaying great enthusiasm and dedication to his team.
