2016 was a year of change for the Bulldogs. A new classification year brought new teams to the schedule such as Mary G. Montgomery, Charles Henderson (Troy), Satsuma, and Escambia County. The season started earlier than usual with a game on August 19 and opening week on September 23. But as usual, the team was very resilient. The Bulldogs finished with a 9 – 3 year getting beat by the eventual 4A State Champions, Handley in the 2nd round. The Bulldogs finished the regular season in a 3-way tie for the Region Championship and also beat St. Paul’s for the 2nd consecutive year. The team was led by 22 seniors, who filled each and every role to which they were called. Seven senior linemen were the mainstay of our offense. Led by Samuel Plash, Harry Parker, Thomas “Woody” Woodford, Brooks Milling, Josh Brantley, Hardy Graham, and Sterling Tedder, our offense averaged over 31 points per game, and our offensive line always showed up. Our other seniors on offense were Tanner Allen (QB), Mac Dale (FB), and Michael Matthews (RE – 1721 yards/26 TDs). Our senior receivers were Will Maitre, Cam McWilliams, and Riley Davis. On Defense, we averaged giving up 10 points per game and were led by our Seniors on Defense Mason Watts (DL – 7 sacks), Dalton Goff (LB – 111 tackles and 11 tackles for loss), Walker Breland (LB – our leading tackler with 121), Ty Rocconi (S – 62 tackles, 4 interceptions), Jack Pugh (S – 99 tackles, 3 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries), John Lassiter (LB – 104 tackles, 9 tackles for loss), Clifton Inge (DL – 55 tackles, 7 tackles for loss), and Jack Weinacker who was the ultimate team player. Our kicker, Walker Shaw, handled kick-offs, extra points, and field goals. This rounds out our 22 seniors, along with our student trainer Laurel Massey who was as reliable as they come. This was one of the best senior groups I have ever been associated with. Their leadership and work ethic was awesome.
Now, it’s back to the weight room and off-season as we prepare to do it again!
