UMS-Wright offers a wide variety of enrichment opportunities once the school day has come to an end. Programs are taught by UMS-Wright faculty members and meet for an estimated hour each week, allowing students to explore interests outside of the classroom. For more information, check out the descriptions below.

Multi-Day Programs  

Academic Coaching with Susanne Winter - $100

Grades: 5-8

Tuesdays and Thursdays

Instructor: Susanne Winter 

Students will develop skills in the areas of organization, homework and long-term project management, as well as test preparation. Students will work in a small group (five or fewer) with a goal of instilling study habits needed for success. Habits reviewed include organizing school materials, checking for and recording assignments, prioritizing assignments and non-academics, studying for major assessments, determining and utilizing one's learning style, and keeping a positive outlook. Understanding and mastering these strategies are necessary steps to successfully facilitate learning.

Cheerleading - $100

Ready...okay! Calling all mini-cheerleaders off their feet! Mini-cheer enthusiasts will scream (well, chant) for this energetic (and LOUD) class as they learn Bulldog cheers, motions, chants, drills, stretches, and jumps! Show your unique cheer flare while making your very own cheer posters, megaphones, and cheer gear. We will end our time together creating and running through our very own breakaway banner! *Pom-poms are encouraged*

 

Toy Story Fun - $100

Yee-haw! Calling ALL cowboys, cowgirls, and space rangers. Come saddle up for a TOY-riffic time while we make alien slime, Forky, Slinky Dog, and more! To infinity and...BEYOND!

 

Lights…Camera…Improv! - $100

Students will laugh like never before as they play the funniest theatre games on stage!  Through these, they will learn the basics of improv and stage presence, while developing listening, communication, and thinking skills.

 

Creative Math Explosion! - $100

Watch MATH and ART collide while bringing geometry to life with a variety of math projects! Math tools such as compasses, rulers, protractors, and geoboards will be used to help students create a variety of projects such as circle art, tessellations, agamographs, and kaliedocycles. Come ready to create!

 

Photo Crafts - $100

Grades: 3-6

Tuesdays

Instructor: Catherine Helmsing

Students will be taking photos and then using them to create different craft projects, including paper beads, a journal, image transfers, and more! All supplies will be provided. Optional- bring your own camera.

Construction Zone - $100

Grades: K4-2

Instructor: Amy Johnson

Students will love pulling out everything from K-nex's, Legos, Lincoln Logs, and architectural blocks as they construct their own cities, towers, and machines. Students will work in groups or individually to make their coolest designs to be photographed each week. At the completion of the session students will take home a scrapbook of their personal creations. There will be zillions of building materials. Hard hats are optional.

 

Glitter and Glow - $100

Grades: K5-3

Christy Mayson and Becky Hall

Is sparkle your child's favorite color? If so, they will love this glittery adventure as we make brilliant creations including a trinket box, a butterfly masterpiece, and sparkly lip gloss. We will end our time together with a body glitter glow dance party! Come "glamp" with us and you'll have a ball!

 

Green Thumb’s Up! - $100

Plant it! Weed it! Recycle it! Students will get a GREEN THUMB as they start the very first UMS-Wright Lower School Environmental Club. Club members will take ownership by brainstorming ideas on a club name, while discussing how to keep our campus clean and beautiful over dirt pudding dessert with creepy crawlers and green ice cream!  From experimenting with gardening and participating in new recycling opportunities to spreading the word about unusual energy saving tips, this club will take a stand to save the earth, starting at school. 

 

Engineering for Kids - $100

Grades: 1-4

A class designed to teach students the concepts of engineering. Students will learn the engineering design process as we build bridges, catapults, create a simple motors, and even learn how to make sticks explode! Come join in the learning fun as we explore the world of engineering for kids.

 

Painting and Mixed-Media for Upper School - $120

Grades: 9-12

Room: Pier Hardin's Room in Fine Arts Building

Instructor: Pier Hardin

Painting and Mixed Media will introduce high school students to some of the hot new media and techniques that combine traditional painting with collage.  Some of the most exciting modern artists are making innovative pieces using hand-painted papers as part of their designs and paintings.  Whether you are a more realistic artist or just like to experiment with design and get a little messy, this class will offer some fun new ways to express yourself.

¡Jello-tástico!- $100

Students will use jello to create art work, edible slime, gummy bears, and even glow in the dark snacks in a Spanish immersion environment.

Do you like green eggs and ham? Bring an appetite for fun as we create edible masterpieces inspired by some of our favorite reads! We will make an edible version of Pete the Cat's shirt with four groovy buttons, pig cookies from The Three Little Pigs, scrumptious straw, stick, and brick houses, and lastly...alligator pie! Come hungry and ready for a storybook adventure.

American Girl Doll - $100

Bring your American Girl Doll and come join in the fun. Our American Girl Club will meet each week to create crafts for our dolls to wear or to use. We will create really cool stuff for your American Girl Doll’s room and things to play with for your American Girl Doll. We will also enjoy learning the about the various lessons that are taught in the American Girl series. Students will also have opportunities to play with their dolls and with their friends as we explore the American Girl world.

Magic in Science - $100
Grades: K5-3

Students will become magic scientists as they discover and master science behind amazing magic tricks. Have you ever stuck a skewer through a balloon without making it pop? Can you remove an egg shell from an egg without touching it? Come explore with us as we try out all kinds of science magic!

Love it or Lose it! - $100

Let's rethink recycling!  In this class, students will brainstorm and use some unique items to create amazing pieces of art.  You will be surprised what little hands can do when we recreate, repurpose and re imagine!
