Meet the Coach

Head Coach Terry Canova

Coach Terry Canova just wrapped up his eleventh season as head coach for the Lady Bulldog Basketball Program, and 25th overall in his career. Over the past eleven seasons the Lady Bulldogs have compiled a 249-83 overall record. During his time at UMS-Wright, Coach Canova averaged 24 wins a year, won eight straight area championships, advanced to six straight regional finals, and two straight Final Fours.  Since Canova’s arrival, UMS-Wright has been consistently considered one of the top programs throughout the Gulf South Region. 

Canova was recognized at the 2013 Final Four in New Orleans by the WBCA for his 200 win milestone which he accomplished in only nine seasons as a high school girls basketball head coach. Currently, Canova is 5 wins shy of win number 300.

Prior to coming to UMS-Wright, Canova spent eight seasons as a collegiate Division I assistant and recruiting coordinator. As a recruiter, Canova landed many decorated players – “College Basketball Hoop’s Scoop” once listed Coach Canova as one of the top recruiters in Women’s Basketball. Throughout his career, Coach Canova has had the opportunity to work side-by-side with some of the best coaches in the nation including current Baylor coach Kim Mulkey and Alabama coach Kristy Curry at the Leon Barmore Louisiana Tech University-Camp of Champions.

Canova also worked numerous other camps across the country, including Doug Bruno’s Camps at DePaul University. As a college coach, Canova had stints at University of South Alabama, University of Louisiana-Monroe, and Nicholls State University. In 2002, Canova was chosen to be a clinician at the Women’s Basketball Final Four in San Antonio, TX. Coach C is married to the former Kimberley Tanner. They have 5 children – Scarlett 23, Christen 22, Alyssa 19, Sophia 17, and Hayden 13.
